One example of the importance of ions in our study of environmental science is the nitrate ion, a nutrient essential for plant growth. Figue2-3 shows measurements of the loss of nitrate ions from the deforested area in the controlled experiment run by Bormann and Likens. Chemical analysis of the water flowing through the deams of the cleared forest area showed a 60-fold rise in the concentration of nitrate ions compared to water running off of the uncleared forest area.
